Animal Farm on Kibbutz Nachshon

Care of the animals on the animal farm on Kibbutz Nachshon is mostly undertaken by the children of the kibbutz.

The farm is not a profitable project but is solely for the enjoyment and education of the kibbutz children. The children that take care of the farm are from the 1st grade through to the 7th grade. Eitan Zachrin is the adult in charge.

On the farm there are the animals that roam freely namely; camel, alpaca, goats, geese, chickens, ducks, donkeys, rabbits and peacocks. There are also the animals that are caged namely; rabbits, hamsters, parakeets and pheasants.

On the farm there is no set routine - the children always feed the animals, but everyone according to his own time schedule. If something special needs to be undertaken such as building a new shed, or buying animals, then the children from the 6th and 7th grade take responsibility since they are the seniors.

After every large project all the children have a party. Often out of the ordinary events happen for example; not long ago a weak kid was born, he couldn't suckle from his mother since her teats were too large. Eitan, Dor and Tomer had to milk the she goat and bottle feed the kid.

It sometimes happens that the hamsters are left without a mother and they need to be raised by one of the children at home until they are strong enough to manage on their own.

Conclusion: The farm was created for the children by the children and only if there are enough volunteers can we enlarge and renovate this project.
